Accountable to the standard

Tuesday, March 23
If someone is living below the standard, as a leader it is your job to hold them accountable. It isn’t always fun, but it is always necessary. When coaching leaders, I tell them that if they know someone is making a mistake and not meeting the standard, and they don’t have a conversation with them about it, they are responsible for that person’s future failure. They could’ve help them correct course and they didn’t. Of course, that person also has to be responsive and willing to be held accountable. But that’s not up to the leader.
But the same is true for us individually. If we are living below the line in our life, and we know it, we have to be honest and hold ourselves accountable. We have to be willing to speak the truth to ourselves, without shaming, and call ourselves back onto the path. We can’t blame others, we can’t make excuses, we have to take ownership. It isn’t always fun but it is always necessary.
And the best part about it is that if we learn to hold ourselves accountable to the standard, we won’t have to deal with the uncomfortable situation of someone else holding us accountable.
Know your standard. Live your standard. Hold yourself accountable to the standard.
