Belief and Doubt

Thursday, June 13

I had a conversation with a friend recently about belief and doubt. Both are technically beliefs, but doubts are negative beliefs. They are unbeliefs.

We came to a point in the discussion that neither of them are real. I tend to believe I can do the next thing, because I did the last thing. But the last thing has nothing to do with the next thing. They both may be difficult and test me, but because I did one doesn’t mean I can do the next.

Doubt, though, is also not real. Doubting my ability to do the next thing because I didn’t do the last thing. Doubting that this conversation will go well. Doubting that I can write the book or give the talk or accomplish the goal.

Belief and doubt are both about a future that hasn’t happened. One just believes that future is possible while the other doubts it is possible.

So if both are untrue, we have to ask ourself which gives us the best possible chance at the outcomes we want. And that answer will always be belief. Because while doubt holds you back, belief holds you forward.

Choose to believe the best. Then go live it.
