Boring

Thursday, June 4

A basketball player shooting 1,000 shots a day alone in an empty gym is boring. Hitting the game-winner is not.

A kicker standing alone on a windy field kicking ball after ball through the uprights is boring. Winning the game as time expires is not.

We could do this for any profession, in or out of sports. The practice isn’t always exciting. You won’t always love it.

I’m in a Facebook group for a fitness app I use. It seems like every time I check it, people are complaining about getting bored with the programming of their team.

Feeling a little spicy one day, I commented on one of the threads: “Are you stronger and in better shape?” They admitted they were.

Which means the "boring" workouts were doing exactly what they were designed to do. They were working.

Whatever your goal is - becoming a better leader, building a tougher mindset, creating a healthier culture, getting in shape, developing a specific skill - there is work required. And that work won’t always be exciting..

The work itself isn't the point. The point is that the work is developing the exact thing you say you want.

Greatness is boring. Keep showing up.
