Catching up

Our team has added virtual and in-person keynotes and workshops in several states over the last week. We also do leadership academies and monthly consulting on mindset, leadership and performance. If you or your team is looking to get better, reply to this email and we can chat.

“He’s a runner like you, Dad.”
One of my kids said that recently while we were driving somewhere. He was telling the whole car about the substitute teacher they had that day.
“You think I’m a runner?” I asked.
Another son jumped in:
“You run more than anyone I know, besides my friends who run track or cross country.”
Here’s the truth:
I’ve run twice this year.
Once in January. Once in February.
I only ran 11 times in all of 2024.
In 2020, I ran over 100 times. This year? On pace for 6.
Two years ago, I traded running for lifting weights. For reference, I’ve worked out 119 times this year (including stretching and mobility). I worked out 363 days in 2024.
But my kids?
They still see me as a runner.
It hit me:
You can work hard to change who you are and how you show up, but people - often especially those closest to you - might not notice right away.
They’re seeing the old version of you.
The one they remember.
Not the one you’re becoming.
Eventually, they’ll catch up. And at times, you’ll have to remind them.
But in the meantime, don’t get discouraged.
Your progress is still real, even if others can’t see it yet. Stay focused on that.
