Change the room

Tuesday, January 20

You want better habits, but you first need a better environment.

It’s not your willpower, your motivation, your drive, your why. Those things matter, but on days when they fade, something has to get you moving in the right direction.

We talk all the time with teams about culture drives habits. If your team has a habit of gossip, it’s because your culture allows it.

But this concept is also true for us. Think of culture as environment. Your current environment is perfectly designed to drive your current habits.

If you sleep in. If you don’t go to the gym. If you avoid the hard conversation. If your diet isn’t what you want. Yes, you need to have some self-control, some ownership, some discipline. But you also need to change your environment.

Not drastically, but enough to lead you toward better habits.

This is where you hear of things like a runner putting their clothes next to their bed so they trip over them when they wake up, resulting in them putting them on to go for a run. (as opposed to battling the mind to get up and go search through a dark drawer or closet).

Willpower sounds good but is working against nature. Change the room, change the result.
