Choose You

Monday, December 18

My wife, among many other things, is an artist. And, if I can brag for a moment, a pretty incredible artist (shameless plug: you can check out some of her work here. You might just find a last minute Christmas gift).

She was working on a painting Saturday night that our whole family thought was incredible. My oldest stated it might be some of her best work. We were talking about it later on that night and she said, “What’s funny is that it was a different painting this morning.”

I thought she meant that she had had a different idea in her head that morning for what she wanted to paint, but changed directions once she got going. Not the case. What she meant was that it had been a completed painting earlier that day. It was a painting she had a done a few months back that she never fully loved, and so she just painted over it and created something completely new.

It was a reminder to me of the power of decisions and the potential for change. Who you were yesterday is not you who have to be today. Who you were an hour ago is not who you have to be right now. You always have the opportunity to change, to grow, to step into a better version of you. You are not held back by your past, by your mistakes (or successes), by what used to be.

You, in this moment and in every moment, have the power to choose who you want to be. Choose the best version of you.
