I watched the Rafa Nadal documentary on Netflix over the weekend with one of my sons. Cannot recommend it enough.

There were a number of lines and lessons that stuck out to me, but this one continues to stick in my mind:

People thought I was a winner. I’m not a winner. I’m a competitor.

Does winning matter? Sure. Does getting the outcomes you want in life matter? Sometimes. But those are out of your control. Even the best in the world lose. The question is are you competing? Are you showing up with the right attitude, the right effort, honoring the moment in front of you? After a brutal 5-set loss to Djokovic in the 2012 Australian Open final, Nadal said that he was not devastated. He was satisfied. He had been battling mentally and physically, and that match he knew he still had it. He had lost the match but he’d won mentally. Because he competed.

Outcomes are fleeting. But you can be at peace with who you are when you know you gave the moment everything. Compete today.
