Dark, cold work

Tuesday, November 11
It was in the 30s last night here in Oklahoma with a wind chill in the 20s (it got colder overnight). At one point I yelled for my middle son and didn’t get an answer. We walked around the house for a bit without seeing him, then I walked down a hallway and heard a faint sound of a ball bouncing.
I peeked out a window and saw him, sweats and hoodie on, working on basketball drills.
He could’ve been watching TV. He could’ve been on his phone. And yes, he does those things. But at this moment, alone on a cold, dark driveway, he was working to get better on something he cares about.
Plenty of opportunities for excuses. But he took ownership. Because he cares, he does the work. There’s no guarantee of an outcome. He’s not guaranteed to start or to even see the court. And yet he still chose to do the inconvenient work.
Getting better isn’t about the outcome. It’s about your willingness to stop making excuses and do the uncomfortable, inconvenient, sometimes boring and isolated work.
Show up.
Keep chopping wood. 🪵🪓
