How are you trending?

This is a question I ask leaders and teams often. At the core of it is direction. What direction are you moving? Are you moving toward your goal or away from it? There is no lukewarm, there is no being stagnant. You are getting better or worse.

The key here is that you must actually have a goal that you are pursuing. The target you are aiming for. The destination you are seeking. Because without this, you are rudderless. You will never make consistent progress, never have a real chance of getting what you want unless you truly happen to be the luckiest person on the planet. But that’s not a strategy to rely on or hope for.

Goals are never about the goal itself. It’s about the direction it moves you. Because if you are moving in the right direction, you are getting better. And getting better is always the ultimate goal.

If you aren’t trending in the right direction, make sure you have something to pull you in the right direction.
