Distraction of easy

Thursday, September 5

Are you a leader in sports? Don’t miss the BETTER newsletter this week (goes out at 10a ET today). I think it’s one of our best. If you are coach, you’re definitely going to want to subscribe. Do that here.

I know you want to do the easy thing.
I know you want to take the easy path.
I know you want the work to be easier.

The question you have to ask yourself is this. “Will that easy thing make me better?” It might. I’m not an all or nothing type of person. Context always matters. But what I’ve found to be true in almost every circumstance when it comes to getting better, is that the easy thing isn’t the right thing. In fact, the easy thing today only makes the difficult thing you need to do even more difficult later on. Because eventually, you’ll have to do the difficult thing.

It’s hard to be healthy.
It’s hard to build good relationships.
It’s hard to be a good leader.
It’s hard to have a strong mindset.

But it’s even harder to be unhealthy, to have bad relationships, to be a bad leader, to have a negative mindset.

Don’t be distracted by easy. Embrace the hard work of getting better.
