Maybe you’ve heard the story of Nick Dunlap last week. In the opening round of The Masters, the 42nd ranked golfer in the world put up a 90 on the scorecard. That’s 18-over par and dead last in the field. Not just dead last, embarrassingly dead last. The person ahead of him shot a 7-over par 79.

Now what? Dunlap could’ve claimed illness or injury or anything else and backed out of the rest of the tournament. Nobody would’ve blamed him. He has no shot to win it so what’s the point?

But Dunlap went to work that night and practiced. He got his emotions out. He dealt with it.

And he came back Friday and fired a 71. One-under par and a 19 stroke improvement.

He didn’t make the cut, but it didn’t matter. He showed what he was made of. He found out what he was made of.

Instead of excuses, he committed. Instead of quitting, he kept going. Instead of complaining, he found a way. He showed up. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t fun, and there was nothing to play for in terms of The Masters but everything to play for in terms of who he is.

Maybe last week didn’t go your way. Maybe this year hasn’t gone your way. This is when you find out who you are. This is when you decide you are.

You committed to the work so keep showing up. No matter the outcome, the growth is worth it.
