Emotions and Standards

Friday, April 5

Emotions are sometimes right but that doesn’t mean they are always right.

You don’t get to decide if you feel the emotion, but you get to decide if you listen to the emotion, let the emotion dictate your actions, give the emotion power over your moment.

And just because you feel the emotion, doesn’t mean that the emotion is true or helpful. Having the emotion doesn’t have to lead to empowering the emotion.

Because at the end of the day we have a standard we have committed to - or at least you should have a standard that you have committed to. And when emotions get loud, the standard has to be louder. The emotion has to pass the test of whether or not the actions it will lead to are actions that match the standard.

This is what self-awareness looks like. This is what self-regulation looks like. This is what self-discipline looks like.

Have the emotion but don’t be the emotion. Make sure your standard wins the moment.
