Excuses or Progress

Friday, August 30

You’re the problem. (No, I’m not going to quote Taylor Swift)

I know, that’s harsh. It might be hurtful. But hurtful is not the same as harmful. Because the truth, well, it sometimes hurts. But the truth is always helpful.

But the most common issue I run into with every leader, every team, every coach, every athlete, every CEO, every manger, every organization, every employee, is that they think the lack of progress for them is somebody else’s fault. So when they bring up a frustration, my question to them is this. “What are you going to do about it?”

Every issue is your fault. Imagine how much progress you would make if you took on that mindset. It doesn’t mean that other people don’t play a role, but it means you stop blaming them, you stop complaining about them, and you start looking in the mirror. Why? Because you don’t control them. You control you.

There are a million excuses you could make. And you know where they lead you? Right back to where you are, only with more wasted time and more wasted energy. Or you can do what needs to be done and move one step forward. You get to choose your path.

You can make excuses or you can make progress. You can’t do both.
