Feel the failure

Wednesday, July 9

We talk a lot about visualization when working with athletes, as well as leaders. To see yourself making the play, closing the deal, winning the game, hitting the goal.

It works. Mental reps build real confidence. The brain doesn’t know the difference between physical and imagined reps.

But we rarely talk about the other side of visualization.

Visualizing failure.

Visualize what it looks like a year from now if you don’t work on your leadership.
If you don’t fight for your health.
If you neglect your relationships.
If you ignore your culture.

There is a cost to not doing the work, but it is quiet. It’s not something you feel today. It may start as a whisper but over time it becomes unavoidable. And at that point, it feels too late. It’s not something a simple change will fix, it requires a major change of course. It’s a feeling none of us want to have.

The good news is you still have a choice. Some things cannot be avoided, but avoiding the regret of not doing the work is 100% in your control.

Pay the price of the work today so you don’t pay the cost of not doing it down the road.
