Feeling behind the feeling

Wednesday, August 19

You get nervous in the meeting.
You feel pressure before the big shot.
Your negative self-talk gets loud before the game.
Fear wants to take over right before the interview.

These are important things to be aware of and recognize. These are things that, if left unchecked, impact our performance. Too often we just assume them as part of our identity.

The key to performance is not just identifying these things, it’s identifying why these things. When I was in the corporate world, they taught us to find the question behind the question when doing sales. Meaning, their stated objection isn’t the real objection. Find the thing that’s driving that question.

It’s the same for performance. It’s not the feeling. It’s the feeling behind the feeling.

Because your ability is rarely the problem - though there is always room for growth. The key is to find what is interfering with your ability, and why.

Win the game within.
