Fight the battle

Tuesday, October 31

A friend was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago. A married father of two kids younger than second grade, he was told the chances of making it to Christmas.

In that moment, and in every moment since, he had a choice to make. He had a choice with how he was going to view his situation, with how he was going to live.

He’s not someone who is very active on social media, but he has been these last few months. Posting pictures of going to concerts, vacation, walks around the neighborhood with his family, game nights with friends, etc. In an update one night, he said he’s been more active on social media because he wants to show people that, “I’m not curled up on a gurney somewhere waiting to die. I’m here. I’m fighting. I’m living as full of a life as I can.”

He chose life, he chose hope, he chose to be positive, he chose to get in the battle. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t have hard days. He has unbelievably hard days and difficult moments. But he’s not blaming anybody, he’s not letting his circumstances overwhelm him, not let his attitude be dictated by his situation.

He keeps battling, keeps going, keeps living. He’s choosing his perspective and having a better experience (and giving those around him a better experience).

I don’t know what you’re battling. Maybe it’s as bad as cancer or maybe it’s just a bad boss or a rough season. What I do know is you get to choose how you battle it. You get to choose whether you give up, go negative, let the fear and frustration win, or if you keep going, keep fighting, look for the good.

Own the way you show up.
