The first skill

Thursday, November 16

You know you need to work out but you watch a TV show instead.
You know you need to eat better but eat an unhealthy snack instead.
You know you need to be a better communicator but you don’t change how you communicate.
You know you need to be a better leader but you keep doing the same things every day.

You know what to do. You just don’t have the discipline to do it. Because in the moment, it’s easier to do what’s natural and familiar. It’s our default. We return to our tendencies. You keep hoping things will change but they won’t, at least not for the better. We don’t drift toward getting better. We drift toward comfort.

But when you have developed discipline? Doing the right thing becomes easier. Doing the necessary thing becomes easier. Doing the healthier thing becomes easier. Disciplined in thought, disciplined in speech, disciplined in action.

The first skill to develop is discipline.
