Helpless

You aren’t helpless.

This is a phrase we use often in our house. We have a general - not hard and fast - rule that we won’t help our kids do anything they can do themselves. Of course sometimes we want to be helpful or generous and will help them out, but for the most part if they can do it, they need to do it.

There are a few reasons for this. One is independence. Someday they will be on their own and need to know how to do things. Laundry, cooking, etc. Another reason is for them to realize they are capable. They don’t need to ask my wife and I for help all the time. They are capable of solving a problem and completing a task. This will be a huge benefit when they are in the workforce, learning to ask for help when they actually need it, not just because asking for help was their first instinct.

And if you're honest with yourself, how often do you act helpless when you're actually just avoiding the work?

You are not helpless. You can do the work. You can get better. You can take ownership. In fact, nobody can do it for you. They might be able to help give you advice on what to do, but only you can do the work.

You are not helpless. Take action today.
