Higher Standards

Friday, January 12

Most people wait until they are sick to try to make better health decisions.
Most people wait until they are in debt to try to make better financial decisions.
Most people wait until the marriage is broken to try to make better relationship decisions.
Most people wait until the culture is toxic to try to make better leadership decisions.

And it makes sense. We tend to neglect things until we’re forced to make them a priority. But that also means we start caring and taking action when it’s the most difficult. Because instead of trying to build something we have to work extra hard to fix something. All the things we neglect (which certainly includes more than just the things listed above) at one time were decent. Some may have even been great. How much easier would it have been to focus on these things then?

The key? Higher standards and higher accountability. List out the things you care about. The things you can’t afford to neglect. Commit to living a higher standard in those areas. It doesn’t mean your perfect, but it does mean you don’t end up being forced to care about them before it’s too late.

Raise the standard. Commit to the standard.
