I wish I had...

Tuesday, May 6

I was talking with a coach recently whose team had just ended their season earlier than expected.

As he reflected on the season, there were a lot of “I wish I had…” statements being made.

“I wish I had pushed us more in these areas.”
“I wish I had addressed the issues earlier.”
“I wish I had been clearer on expectations.”
“I wish I had been more intentional with developing our leaders.”

When talking about his end of season meetings with players, they had said similar statements, wishing they’d been more disciplined, wishing they’d taken practice more seriously, wishing they had spoken up more, wishing they had worked harder outside of practice, etc.

What is true for them, and is true for us, is that we never have as much time as we think. We let things slide, we ignore issues that need to be addressed, we play it safe, we get complacent. And then we look back and wish we had done things different. We knew what needed to be done, but we avoided it. We told ourselves we would do it tomorrow, we would start next month, we would handle it later.

Today is a day to take action. To be intentional. To take a step forward on the things you’ve been avoiding. Stop delaying, stop procrastinating, stop lying to yourself about doing it tomorrow. You don’t have as much time as you think. Don’t wish you had done the work today. Do the work today.
