Imagine

Wednesday, May 13

We love to assume the worst.

“I won’t get the job.”
“I won’t get the promotion.”
“I won’t make the play.”
“I won’t be good at the conversation.”

Why do we think that? Because we’re afraid we’re not good enough. And we are afraid we aren’t good enough because we don’t believe we’re good enough. And if we’re not good enough, why would we expect good things to happen?

As a result, our actions follow that negative belief. And the thing doesn’t work out. Not because we aren’t good enough, but because we believed we weren’t and then we acted on that belief (or unbelief).

What if you assumed the best? What if you imagined the best-case scenario?

“I will get the job.”
“I will get the promotion.”
“I will make the play.”
“I will be good at the hard conversation.”

Does it guarantee the outcome? Of course not. But which approach gives the best possible chance at the best possible outcome? When you expect the best, you believe you are good enough. And when you believe you are good enough, you have better actions with better attitude and better effort.

Believe the best about yourself and about your situation.
