Inconsistent
Wednesday, September 18
“I’m so inconsistent. I never seem to stick with the process.”
This is a lament I hear often from leaders. They know what to do, and they do it sometimes, but not often enough. They’re good for a week, then fall off the wagon. They have a couple of good days, then get off the path.
My first response to them is to figure out if they are inconsistent or just human. Not meeting the standard now and then is human - perfection isn’t our goal. But constant peaks and valleys becomes a problem.
The problem is often their mindset. They can’t change their physical habits because they never changed their mental habits. You can choose to do the right thing now and then, but eventually your emotions and feelings will take over if you’ve not done the work to train the mind.
Think of it like a golfer. They know what to do. They know how to swing a club. They know how to hit every shot. So why are so many of them so inconsistent? Because they haven’t worked on the inner game as much as they have the outer game. Their mindset is not consistent over the course of a round, which means their play is not consistent.
Inconsistent results come from inconsistent actions which come from inconsistent thoughts.
If you want to develop discipline, start with the mind.
