“It just hurts, you’re not going to die.”

That’s what a coach said to me during a recent workout. It was silly and ridiculous, because of course I knew I wasn’t going to die. But that didn’t mean the workout was fun, or easy, or free of pain.

It was difficult. It was challenging. It hurt (in the right ways, not in the ways that lead to injury). But, it was temporary. No matter what my brain thought, I wasn’t going to die. I was going to be in pain for a few minutes (and maybe the next day due to soreness), but that was it.

When going through struggles in life, we can lose perspective and think that they are going to end us. But they are temporary. It hurts for a minute, for a season, but you aren’t going to die (I’m clearly not talking about or dismissing things like terminal illness. I’m talking about the everyday struggles of life that we all experience).

In fact, just like with working out, that temporary pain is leading to growth. It is making you better.

The path of progress isn’t easy and it is often painful. But you always come out better on the other side of doing the work.

Keep showing up.
