Are you a quarter horse or a pack mule?

I was listening to a former Navy SEAL talk recently about the process of selection and assessment. One person in the discussion shared about someone in this process running a 7:25 mile, having a great swim, and still not getting selected. The person was shocked.

The former SEAL's answer was brilliant. "The problem is that the guy ran that 7:25 fresh. He didn't run it after other workouts at the end of the day. The thing about being a SEAL is that it's not about running and swimming fast. It's about not quitting. They want pack mules, not quarter horses. A quarter horse has a burst of energy and then is exhausted. A pack mule can go for days and not get tired. It's about endurance."

This is the race of life. Everyone is chasing short-term satisfaction, short-term goals that aren't fulfilling. True success, influence, impact, and skill development are about playing the long game. It's about doing the little things today that allow you to stay on the path tomorrow.

When others give up, when others get distracted, when others stop at a short-term win, be the one who endures. Be a pack mule.
