Keep Chopping Wood. Friday, August 18

Friday, August 18

Are you willing to do the work for longer than you think you’ll have to?

Michael Jordan didn’t win his first championship until his 7th year.
Apple was started in 1976 but wasn’t considered a household name until 1998.
Nick Saban had been a head coach for 9 years before winning his first national championship.
David was promised he would be king but had to wait 15 years before it would be true.

Each of these people were considered a success before these accomplishments, but these accomplishments are what they were after. It put them in a different echelon of success. But it took longer than they wanted or expected it to. Yet they kept showing up.

You will not achieve your goal in a week, a month, maybe even a year. The change you are wanting to see will take longer than you think and will be more difficult than you expect. Are you still willing to show up? Are you still willing to do the work?

Most people fall short of their goals not because of their talent, but because they have unreasonable expectations for how long it will take. So when it gets difficult, or takes “too long” according to their timeline, they quit. They didn’t develop a mindset of commitment or resilience.

Your goals will take as long as they take. Be patient, be persistent, stay in the arena.
