Great teams disagree.
Great teams debate.

Somehow we’ve created this idea that the best teams always see eye to eye, never have disagreements, never debate issues, and never have differing opinions. I would argue the exact opposite. If your team never disagrees, something is wrong. If your team never debates a strategy, issue, plan, hire, product, or idea, something is wrong. You don’t have a strong culture. You have a culture of fear and silence, where people are scared to speak up.

The key is that the best teams aren’t battling each other. They aren’t debating things involving ego. They don’t disagree over who is better than someone else or who needs to be “right” on an issue. The best teams are fighting for what’s best. Amid the disagreements is an agreement that everyone wants what will help the team. And when that is the end goal, debate is a healthy thing.

Don’t run from debate or disagreement. Embrace it as a tool to help you and the team get better.
