Keep Chopping Wood. Monday, August 28

Monday, August 28

You get to choose your behavior.

I was talking with a friend recently who was frustrated, having been put in a difficult situation where taking the high road was the right but hard thing to do. “I know what I should do, but it’s not what I want to do. I’m annoyed and frustrated, but despite my attitude, I’m choosing to do what I know is right.”

It was a moment that, quite honestly, most people don’t live. Most people let their emotions get in the way. They use difficult or inconvenient situations to justify their actions. And, for the most part, we all encourage it. We respond with things like, “You have every right to respond that way. What could they expect given the situation they put you in?” And the cycle of unhealthy behaviors continues.

Yet here she was, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation, admitting that she had a bad attitude about it, yet choosing to live her standard when it came to her actions.

You may find yourself in difficult situations today. You may be in a difficult situation right now. It may impact your attitude, which is normal. But it doesn’t have to influence your actions. No matter the circumstances or how you feel, you can choose to do what you know is right.

You get to choose whether or not you live your standard today.
