Keep Chopping Wood. Monday, June 5

Monday, June 5

I saw a clip of an interview with actor Chris Pratt recently where he was talking about his relationship with food. Over the years, he’s gone from being an overweight funny guy on TV to playing superhero roles—a significant transformation.

He said in the interview that meals used to be enjoyable for him. He would eat whatever he wanted (none of it healthy) and however much of it he wanted. As a result, life in between meals was horrible. He didn’t feel well, was sick, overweight and just generally unhappy.

Now, though, he says his meals are pretty boring. He’s gone from eating junk food to a steady chicken, rice, and vegetables diet. The difference, he said, is that now life in between meals is exciting. He’s gone from feeling miserable between meals to feeling alive and energetic.

He makes short-term sacrifices for long-term payoffs. This is the process of getting better. You trade things that don’t move you in the right direction for things that do move you in the right direction. You replace what you want to do with what you need to do.

The path to better may not always be fun; it may not always be enjoyable, and it may not always be flashy. But it is always worth it.
