Don’t wait for perfect.

I was watching my oldest son’s baseball practice recently when they were working on turning double plays. On one particular play, the shortstop didn’t make a great toss to second, but the second baseman adjusted in the moment, made the catch and turned to make a solid throw to first base.

It would’ve been easy at that moment to either miss the ball or come off the base to catch it and not get the double play - potentially not even being able to make the throw to first to get any out. And the player would’ve had an excuse. “He didn’t give me a perfect throw.”

We talk a lot with our boys about adjusting to the circumstances, in sports and in life. To be prepared for imperfect. It’s unlikely the pitcher will throw the perfect pitch. You can still get a hit. Your teammates may not make a perfect throw. You can still make a play. The weather won’t be perfect. You can still bring your best.

The same is true for us. You won’t always have the perfect amount of information for the decision. You won’t always have the perfect amount of details to start the project. You won’t always have the perfect amount of time to prepare for the meeting. You won’t always have the perfect amount of resources to deliver how you want. Will you make excuses or will you find a way?

Be good enough that you don’t need things to be perfect to be at your best.
