Keep Chopping Wood. Thursday, May 25

The story of a Club Pro from California competing with the best golfers in the world became the story of the PGA Championship and the sports story of the weekend. The short version is that Michael Block, a Club Pro and golf instructor in California, was one of 20 club pros invited to the event. He finished in the top 15 and even had a hole-in-one—an unforgettable weekend.

Heading into the final round, Block was in the top 10. During the third round, he played with Justin Rose, one of his favorite golfers. When a reporter asked him how he blocked out the noise trying to focus on golf, he had a great answer.

Block mentioned that he didn’t even look at Justin Rose until the third hole. “I knew if I looked up and realized I was playing with Justin Rose, the moment might get too big for me. So I just looked at his shoes the first few holes.”

What I love about this moment is both his honesty and his level of self-awareness. He knew he’d never been in a moment like this and wasn’t sure if he could handle it. He knew that if he focused on who he was playing with, the magnitude of the moment, or the money he could make, he would be overwhelmed and not play his best. He wanted a better outcome, so what did he do? He chose a better action. He focused on what he could control. Know yourself to lead yourself.

Today you have a choice in what you focus on. You can focus on what will stress and overwhelm you, making you angry, anxious, and afraid. Or you can focus on what will allow you to bring your best to the day. Where focus goes, energy flows.

Give your attention to what matters today.
