Keep Chopping Wood. Wednesday, July 12

Quitting is easy. Commitment unlocks potential.

Something incredible happened Saturday during the 3000m steeplechase event at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The race began and Kenneth Rooks, a student-athlete at BYU who was racing against professionals, tripped over one of the jumps and fell to the ground. By the time he rolled over and got up, he was at the back of the pack.

Gut check time.

It would have been easy for Rooks to quit. It would’ve been understandable even. At most, people may have expected that he get up and simply finish the race.

Rooks didn’t just get up, didn’t just keep going and didn’t just finish. Down the last stretch he took the lead and he ended up winning the event. And not just winning - while being a college student taking out pros - but doing it while setting a personal best time for the event. You can watch video of it here.

Today you may face obstacles. You may even get knocked down and set back by them. But you don’t have to be defeated by them. You have a choice in those moments. A choice to give up or stay in the game. A choice to back down or step up. A choice to flee or to fight. A choice to settle or to see what you’re made of.

Be the kind of person who stays in the battle.
