“Before I do anything, I ask myself, ‘Would an idiot do that?’ And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing.” - noted philosopher and leader, Dwight Schrute

How often have you regretted an action or a word you spoke? How often have you had to go back and apologize (or how often should you have gone back and apologized)? When the pressure is on, when we’re in the midst of the battle, we tend to compromise on our values.

It’s in these moments that we do things we regret. Something that not only takes us off our path but damages our influence. We complain, blame other people, become too judgmental and harsh, quit, or turn negative. We blame these actions on our circumstances, but our actions are always 100% within our control.

One way I’ve found to prevent this is to ask myself, “How would someone who is mentally tough handle this situation?” You may even want to personalize it and ask how a mentally tough version of you would handle this situation.

Maybe you’re stuck in one of those difficult moments right now. Visualize how someone who is resilient, who is confident, who is humble, who is worth following. Would they be responding the way you are? If not, what do you need to do to change course? You don’t have to keep going down the unhealthy path you are going down. You don’t have to make a difficult situation even more difficult.

You are always one decision away from a better outcome. Lead yourself well today.
