Moments between moments

Tuesday, March 26

What do you do when you get critiqued?
What do you do when you make a mistake?
What do you do when you get challenged?
What do you do when you get ignored?
What do you do when your idea gets rejected?
What do you do when you face an obstacle?
What do you do when a teammate or direct report makes a mistake?

These are the moments that matter. It’s not about what happened, it’s about what happens next. And the real key is what happens in the moment between the moments.

Most people make a mistake. Then beat themselves up mentally (the moment between the moments). And follow it up with another mistake in a decision fueled by emotion.

This is both a combination of self-awareness and mental toughness. Knowing your tendencies and choosing a better response.

Make a mistake. Think to yourself, “That’s okay, I can still figure it out. I can learn and get better. This is not the end of the world. I’ve overcome plenty of mistakes.” Then make a calm, strategic, purposeful decision.

Want to get better? Want more influence? Want more progress?
