What are you practicing?

Tuesday, March 12

My wife and I were at dinner recently and struck up a conversation with our waiter. Asking for recommendations for what to get, he mentioned a lot of people loved a certain dish, but he hadn’t had it because it had alcohol in it and he had given up alcohol 2 years ago. He had been unhappy with his health and mindset, so gave up alcohol, then moved to trying to only eat a certain amount of calories each day, then added going to the gym. “If I can do it for 100 days, I know I can stick with it,” he said.

We started talking about the fact that he didn’t get unhealthy overnight, and he wouldn’t get healthy overnight. 2 years and 60lbs later, he’s seen fruit from his commitment.

The same is true for us. Whether it is your leadership, communication, mindset, influence, a relationship or your physical health, these things didn’t get to an unhealthy place overnight. You got a little bit unhealthier each day. Which means that you also won’t fix them overnight. The only thing you can do is get a little bit better each day.

You get good at what you practice. You can practice being unhealthy or you can practice getting better. Commit to the path and the fruit will come.
