I don’t have goals for 2026. That may sound crazy, given the work that I do, but I don’t. I’m not anti-goals, but I do think they can have the wrong impact on us.
I remember entrepreneur Jason Fried one time talking about not having goals for his company. He said something along the lines of, “We set a goal for 20% growth next year. And then we grow 15% and feel like a failure. Why? 15% growth is incredible. But we set a random goal and that drives whether or not we had a ‘successful’ year. That makes no sense.”
Rather than goals, I focus on priorities (you can also call these identities).
Things like being healthy and fit for life (not being at a specific weight), having a profitable and healthy business (not specific revenue goals), etc.
I like to focus this way because these aren’t things to achieve, they are a lifestyle. It’s not lose 50lbs and then figure out what’s next. It’s not hitting a certain revenue goal and then being done. It’s a daily challenge to live certain habits that move me in a certain direction.
Set your priorities for 2026. Then decide how you must live in order for those priorities to be more than talking points.
