Process over results

Wednesday, April 10

My oldest son is a freshman, and his school doesn’t have a freshman baseball team. They are a smaller school and only have Varsity and Junior Varsity. As a freshman, he plays with the JV team.

The season started on March 2 and so far they have only had two JV games. Daily practice. Lifting early in the morning twice a week. To play two games in 6 weeks. Some of it is due to weather, some of it is scheduling issues, some of it Is due to umpires not showing up. Varsity, for comparison, has played 16 games.

He hasn’t said that he’s frustrated but I’m sure he is. It’s a lot of work for not a lot of results. What matters, though, is that he is ready on game day. That when his number is called, he is prepared. And the only thing you can control is whether or not you are prepared. Because if you don’t practice intentionally, if you don’t prepare the right way, if you don’t follow the process, you won’t be ready when the moment arrives. You will be a liability to the team. You will limit your potential. The moment will pass you by.

This is life. This is the process of getting better. This is the process of taking advantage of opportunities.

You show up. You do the work. You don’t see results. You keep showing up. You keep doing the work. You question whether it’s worth it. You keep showing up doing the work. And then it’s time. And you must be ready. Your work, your preparation, your persistence, your commitment, your belief will pay off.

But only if you keep showing up. Only if you keep doing the work.
