Protect or Steward

Monday, September 29
You have power. Based on your role, based on your impact, you have power. Some may have more than you, some may have less than you, but you still have some.
The question is, what do you do with it?
Are your decisions driven by using your power for your own good?
Or are your decisions made by using your power for the good of others?
How you use your power determines the impact you have and the legacy you leave.
For most people, having power only makes them want more. It is an easy thing to become addicted to. And so we go through our days trying to keep others from taking our power, and trying to find out how we can acquire more of it. And, ultimately, it is a losing battle. The more we fight to keep it, the greater the pain when we inevitably lose it.
True power is realizing that what you have is best used for the benefit of those around you. To lift up those to your left and right, to help everyone get closer to the goal. Which, in return, will give you more power because people realize you can be trusted with it. And that is the point. Not to get more power, but to be someone people can trust with power.
Weak leaders fight to protect their power.
Strong leaders steward their power.
