Quit tomorrow

Thursday, August 22

I was talking recently with someone who had recently retired from the military. He was telling the story about how grueling Army Ranger training was, explaining that it had a 50% attrition rate. Just a brutal process.

He told me they had a phrase they used with each other, when someone wanted to quit. “You can quit tomorrow, but not today.” They’d go on to tell the person who was relying on them today, who needed their attention and effort today, who they were impacting today. “If you quit today, you put these people in a bad position. So quit tomorrow.”

This mindset allowed them to power through. To make it to the next day. To finish what they started. It always puts quitting off for a day.

I love this mindset. Because how you feel in the moment can often cloud your judgement, leading to a decision that you’ll ultimately regret. Today may be hard, but tomorrow you may wake up with a renewed perspective.

This is what it looks like to live your standard and your commitments, not your feelings.

The goal you are chasing may feel overwhelming today. It may feel too far out of reach. Progress may be slower than you wanted and you may feel defeated. You can quit tomorrow, but not today. Today, keep going.
