What is required
Monday, September 16
The thing you want requires something from you.
It doesn’t matter that the goal is (becoming a better leader, getting healthier, creating a strong team culture, building a business, writing a book, building a better marriage, etc), there are non-negotiables. Things that must be done if you want to achieve the goal.
Yet so often, if we’re honest with ourselves, we don’t commit to doing those things. We look back at the previous day, week and month and those actions are nowhere to be found. And then we wonder why we’re not making any progress, why things aren’t getting any better.
You need a goal scorecard.
Take the goal that is the biggest priority for you right now. And come up with 3-5 things that are required to be done each day (or most days) in order to make progress and achieve that goal.
For example, if your goal is to get healthy it could be as simple as: work out at least 30 minutes per day, get 8 hours of sleep per night, eat fewer calories than you burn each day.
No matter the goal, make the actions simple. Now grade yourself on a 1/7 scale for each action (I know 1/10 is cleaner but let’s just focus on days of the week). How did you do? How will you be better this week? You don’t need to be perfect, but if you aren’t doing what’s required at least 4 days of the week, don’t expect to make meaningful progress. Because if you do the work 4 days of the week, that means you are undoing it 3 days of the week.
Make a plan, then evaluate yourself again at the end of this week. Repeat next week, and the next.
Know your goal, know what’s required, commit daily to do what’s necessary, hold yourself accountable. Progress doesn’t happen on accident.
