Rising walls

Monday, December 22
They’ve been renovating the building next to our office, and in the process they’ve also added on to it. I usually walk by it on my way to lunch so I’ve been watching the workers faithfully show up and do the work. It’s been going on for probably a year, and for most of that time it looked like nothing was happening. They were there, they were working, they were doing the right thing, but progress wasn’t visible to those walking by.
Now, though, it looks different. Frames are built. Walls are going up. A building is starting to take shape. If you walked by last month and then walked by again today, you’d think it was a different place. And, to be fair, it is. What was is no longer what is.
But it didn’t happen all at once, even though it feels like that in the moment. It happened because the crew showed up each day and did the work. Even when nobody could see it. Even when it didn’t feel like it mattered. Even when it felt like it wasn’t making a difference.
There is still much work to be done, but months of invisible work are now visible.
This is the path of unlocking our potential. Showing up when we don’t feel like it. Showing up when nobody notices. Showing up when it doesn’t feel like it is making a difference.
Because the work is always making a difference.
