Who do you say you are?

Wednesday, May 29

I am a failure.
I am not good enough.
I am not worth it.
I am a bad leader.
I am a bad teammate.
I am weak.
I am a bad ______.

How do you think your day is going to go if that is your self-talk? What kind of actions flow from those thoughts? Not good ones.

I am successful.
I am good enough.
I am worth it.
I am a good leader.
I am a good teammate.
I am resilient.
I am a good ______.

How do you think your day is going to go if that is your self-talk? What kind of actions flow from those thoughts? Better ones.

Self-affirmation is a weird thing, I get it. But it becomes less weird when you just think of it as coaching yourself, as encouraging yourself, as calling yourself up. And there is actual science behind it. Repeating these thoughts to yourself each day starts to change the way your brain is wired. Which starts to change who we are and how we operate. It’s something we work on with athletes and leaders. I have texts from coaches just this past week asking me to work on this with their team. At first they think it’s goofy, then they see it work. (*one side note, saying “I am a millionaire” won’t make you become a millionaire - let’s not get ridiculous)

So, a challenge for you today. Write down 3-5 “I am” statements. Put them in your notes app and read them every morning. Or put them as reminders in your calendar and let these positive thoughts interrupt your day.

We become what we speak to ourselves.
