Seek to serve

Tuesday, May 26

Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend.

Something I thought about yesterday, fittingly, was the idea of service and sacrifice. On a day where we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of others, we today live in a world that is very much focused on the individual.

We will only serve others if it somehow benefits us. Will we get credit for it? Will we get rewarded? Will it advance my position? If no, then no thanks. I’ll continue looking out for me. Now imagine being on the other side of that. Realizing that the person across from you could help, could serve, could sacrifice, but they decided it wasn’t worth it for them.

I would argue we are meant to live in the service of others. Research actually shows that only serving your own interests leads to higher levels of stress, while serving others biologically increases peace, resilience, fulfillment. In our work, we define leadership as fighting for the highest good in the lives of those you lead. Which requires serving them when it is inconvenient for you.

Selfishness makes you sick. Sacrifice makes you strong. Seek to serve today.
