The challenges

Tuesday, October 7
I’ve spent the last couple of days around the top leaders in college athletics. We had a lot of discussions about leadership, culture, performance and the demands of the job. No question, every leader - and this is true no matter what industry you are in - is facing challenges.
The key, though, is in how leaders view and talk about those changes.
Some leaders complain, blame others, get overwhelmed, wish things were “the way they used to be” - even though they probably complained then as well. It’s not quite a victim mindset but it’s getting awfully close.
Other leaders, while still frustrated and realizing the challenge and difficulties in front of them, see the opportunity. They realize this is part of being a leader. They see the chance to create change and growth - for themselves and for others. It doesn’t mean they always like it, but their perspective is different.
And because of their perspective, they have a better approach and a better experience. And so do those they lead.
Complaining compounds problems.
You choose what your perspective. You choose what you get.
