The separator
Monday, October 14
I was talking with someone recently who was struggling with a situation and wanted some advice. We walked through a number of scenarios for how they could address it. For each scenario, they had an excuse for why they couldn’t do it or why it wouldn’t work.
So I stopped and said, “From what I see, you’re frustrated but you don’t want to do anything to change it. Your only option left is to accept the situation and stop complaining about it.” They didn’t like that option either.
I’ve coached or consulted with high performing leaders in every sector, from Athletic Directors to athletes to Head Coaches to CEOs to Superintendents to mid-level managers. People often ask what separates the greats from the average. Yes, things like self-awareness, humility, vision and consistency matter. All those things are necessary. But the greatest separator I’ve found is that those who want to get better and make things better take action. Those who don’t, make excuses.
Because at some point you have to be honest with yourself and realize that change starts with you.
What do you want to get better? What excuses have you been making for why you won’t take action? Today, reject those excuses and take action. Does it mean things immediately change? No. Does it means situations immediately get better? No. But to keep making excuses only guarantees that things stay the same.
Be about action.
