“How do you keep going when you aren’t motivated?”
I’ve mentioned before that I use the Ladder app for my daily workouts (you can currently get 30 days free here). The question about motivation is one of the most common questions in the team chat. It comes from people who are new to the app or to working out, and it comes from people who have been at it for a bit but suddenly don’t feel motivated.
It’s a question I get asked from leaders on their journey of getting better - in any area of life.
My simple answer is always this: do what you committed to.
You committed to getting healthy so do what it takes to get healthy.
You committed to being a better spouse so do what it takes to be a better spouse.
You committed to getting the project done on time so do what it takes to get it done on time.
You committed to helping shift the team culture so do what it takes to shift the team culture.
When you committed, you were excited about it. Today, for a number of reasons, that excitement may have faded.
But excitement and motivation are not necessary ingredients for growth. They are wants, not needs. Nice to haves, not need to haves.
So today, do what you committed to. Remember why you started and hold yourself accountable.
