Warriors vs Mercenaries

Wednesday, January 17

I was talking with a coach recently about the concept of warriors vs mercenaries, especially as it relates to recruiting, player development and culture.

I believe, and so does this coach, that relationships are the key to a strong culture. A culture that lasts, that overcomes, that can accomplish great things on a consistent basis. When you build strong relationships, you develop warriors. Warriors fight for the cause, fight for the person to their left and to their right. They are committed. They are on a mission.

When you don’t develop relationships, when you make everything transactional, you can still win in the short term but in the long run it fizzles out. Everyone is in it for themselves. You get mercenaries who are just in it for the paycheck. When things get difficult, when it matters, nobody fights for each other. They just look out for what’s best for the individual. They do what is convenient for them.

As a leader you have to decide what kind of culture you are going to build, what kind of team, department or organization you are going to lead. Is it going to be one filled with warriors or mercenaries? Do you want people who chase commitment or convenience?

Leaders define culture.
