A winning experience

Is it just about the goal, or is it about how you achieve the goal?
Is it about winning, or the experience along the way to winning?
These are questions leaders must wrestle with as they look to create their culture and, ultimately, accomplish the goals set for the team.
The answer, of course, is that it always depends. But more often than not, when winning or accomplishing the goal is the only thing that matters, how you get there and what people experience along the way will not lead to repeated success. Because when winning is the only driver, people get ignored and used for the good of the goal.
Yet on teams where people are valued, where people are listened to, while being held accountable to a standard of excellence, not only are the goals achieved today but also tomorrow.
Because the result is a team that is valued and values each other. A team who is committed, not just compliant. A team who is bought in, not just bought.
As the leader, you get to decide what matters. When you focus on the goals, you lose the people. When you focus on the people, you’ll hit the goals.
Leaders define culture.
