Worthy of your goals

Apologies for no email yesterday. The platform I use for this put some new security features in place and ended up locking me out of the account for most of the day. Onward.

I recently heard a clip of a podcast with former Duke and NBA player JJ Redick. He was talking about the meanest thing Coach K said to him, which came after his sophomore season. He noted that while he received some honors and awards after that season and the team made the Final Four, he had actually had a bad season. He partied too much, didn’t work on his craft, wasn’t in shape, was a bad teammate, just went through the motions. In his words he wasn’t “committed” that year. He essentially got by on talent.

After the season, Coach K told him in a private meeting, “We didn’t win a national championship because you weren’t worthy to be a champion.”

His point, while harsh, was that we didn’t win because you didn’t do what was required. Your attitude, your actions, your mindset, your habits don’t deserve the goal you said you want. Redick noted that the reason it stung so much, was because it was true. “He was 100% correct. And from that moment, I made sure the rest of my college and pro career that a coach couldn’t say that about me.”

So the question is, are you worthy of your goals? You have the goal. You have the dream. But are you doing what is required? You don’t deserve the influence, the promotion, the health, the culture, the mindset, the results simply because you say you want them. You must earn them. Every day.

Be worthy of your goals.
